Looking at the recall election yesterday in my state of Wisconsin I am starting to feel that democracy is dying. It is all about the money and playing on peoples fears/ignorance. Governor Walker outspent Barrett 8 to 1 in this recall. He got to raise a lot of this money due to a loophole in Wisconsin law that allows someone involved in a recall election to raise unlimited funds. If people really believed what he had to say why would he need to use a loophole to outspend someone 8 to 1. Some of that money was spent on an ad that claim a creation of 33,200 jobs where he used two different methods to come up with this total. Instead of using the monthly BLS numbers that showed job loss for 2011 he used a quarterly method that showed job growth, but these numbers won’t be verified until three weeks after the election. Along with that method he used the 2012 monthly BLS numbers, which showed positive job growth. Combining two different methods cause using the same method wouldn’t look as good seems to be common place in politics today. Although I can’t argue whether or not Walker created or lost job I can argue the fact that information is not presented fairly to the people. I know from conversations with many of the republicans I know they believe that he created exactly 33,200 jobs and they have no idea how these numbers were reached. It’s this type of false advertising, playing with numbers, and money driven politics I can not stand. There are many people who make there decisions based off of commercials, slogans, etc and not on pure knowledge. This worries me greatly and , although highly unlikely, I hope to one day see a democracy in America that is based on facts, knowledge, and doing what’s right for our people and not on money, lies, and playing on peoples fears. I don’t get political often and this is probably not all that well written, but I just wanted to express some of my frustration.
